Yeah, he screwed his face when he quit acting and took up boxing. He probably should have just lived with the boxing damage – he can act, so I’m sure he would have got roles, and his face would have looked better beat up than freaky plasticised.

He had his face broken in a boxing match that really destroyed the structure of his face. The plastic surgeon that tried to repair it should be banned from practice. It went horribly wrong and Mickey had to deal with that. He still is an awesome actor and that fact is all that matters. Watch The Wrestler, The pope of Greenwich village, or even sin city.

I’ve wondered too. Here we don’t see him for ten years and he shows up in Ironman a totally different guy, much older looking, fat, bloated, really bloated. I agree with the bad accident theory and a botched or really bad plastic repair job. He’s hard to look at now.

Ah, I don’t think it was from boxing. I heard he got in a terrible car accident and he needed surgery to repair the damages done to his face and body…

What went wrong was he got into boxing, and he wasn’t good at it. The surgery was to try to repair the damage done by getting continually pounded in the face.
